The number of layoff announcements at U.S. technology corporations continues to grow, outpacing other industries amid investments in artificial intelligence (AI). This was reported on April 2 by Bloomberg with reference to a report by the company on the employment of dismissed employees of Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

"[In March 2026], employers in the technology sector announced the reduction of 18,720 jobs, which is 24% more than in March 2025. Thus, the total number of cuts in the industry since the beginning of 2026 has exceeded 52 thousand, which is the largest number of cuts in the first quarter since 2023," the material says.

It is noted that technology companies such as Meta (an extremist organization whose activities are banned in the Russian Federation), Oracle Corp. and Block Inc., are cutting staff as resources are redirected to investing in AI. However, the company noted that the overall layoff rate remains low for now, as the U.S. labor market is still teetering in a state of "low hiring, low layoffs."

At the same time, Challenger, Gray & Christmas also noted that, although AI is the main reason for announcing layoffs, employers are also cutting employees due to business closures or as part of local restructurings.

The Reuters news agency noted on March 14 that Meta plans to cut more than 20% of employees amid efforts to compensate for spending on the development of artificial intelligence technologies.

In January, the Financial Times reported that major American companies, including Amazon, UPS, Dow, Nike and Home Depot, intend to lay off at least 52,000 employees amid slowing labor market growth and the active introduction of AI. Companies attributed the massive reductions to economic uncertainty and a desire to reduce costs through automation and AI.
