The prosecutor requested 15 years in prison for the ex-governor of the Kursk region Smirnov

The state prosecution demands that Alexei Smirnov, the former governor of the Kursk Region, be sentenced to 15 years in a high-security penal colony, accused of accepting large-scale bribes. This was reported to Izvestia on April 2 by the court's press service.

The prosecutor also asked to fine Smirnov 500 million rubles and confiscate 20.9 million rubles from him.

The joint press service of the courts of the Kursk region noted that Smirnov, together with the former vice-governor of the region, Alexei Dedov, received a bribe of 13 million rubles for helping the organizations Stroytechnogroup LLC and Euroclimat 2000 LLC. In addition, they helped the CPC Service company, which is associated with Maxim Vasiliev, an ex-deputy of the Kursk Regional Duma. For this, the defendants received another 8 million rubles.

Smirnov admitted to receiving these bribes, but noted that he had never asked the contractors for money — according to him, it was their "voluntary wishes." On February 25, he confirmed the testimony about Starovoit receiving bribes on a particularly large scale.

Defense initiative: why the ex-head of the Kursk region was arrested

On February 25, Smirnov confirmed testimony that Roman Starovoit, the former head of the region and former Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation, had received large-scale bribes. Prior to that, in February, Smirnov was placed in jail on the register as suicidal and self-harming.

Smirnov and Dedov were taken into custody on February 6. It was reported that the ex-governor signed a cooperation agreement with the court, so his case will be considered in a special order. Dedov signed a similar agreement, but 19 years in prison were subsequently requested for him.

On September 10 last year, the Russian Prosecutor General's Office sent to court a case on the embezzlement of 152 million rubles, which were intended for the construction of fortifications in the Kursk region. Later, she sent to court cases of bribery in the amount of more than 20 million rubles against Smirnov and Dedov.
