- The Russian Orthodox Church named acceptable grounds for a paternity test before childbirth
Prenatal genetic diagnosis to identify paternity should be performed only if there are compelling legal grounds. This was announced on April 2 by the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC).
"Prenatal genetic diagnosis in order to identify paternity should be motivated by serious legal grounds and cannot be the result of an arbitrary expression of distrust or jealousy of a spouse, as well as become a prerequisite for termination of pregnancy in any circumstances," says the draft document on gene therapy and genetic diagnosis prepared by the Synodal Commission on Bioethics of the Russian Orthodox Church.
It is noted that people who marry and are aware of the high risk of transmission of hereditary diseases to future children should consciously and voluntarily accept the possible consequences of such a union. They have the responsibility to raise and take care of all children born into the family.
Prenatal diagnosis in the Russian Orthodox Church is considered morally justified only in two cases: when it helps to treat identified diseases in the early stages or allows parents to prepare in advance for special care of the child.
