Due to bad weather, the Libyan authorities lost control of the Russian gas carrier Arctic Metagaz, the vessel broke away from the tugboat and began to drift in the Mediterranean Sea. This was announced on April 2 by the Libyan Ports and Maritime Transport Authority.

"The towing operation has failed. It happened on April 2 at 4:00 a.m. local time (3.00 a.m. Moscow time. — Ed.) due to weather conditions. Thus, the tanker got out of control," the department said.
