Russia sees Armenia's preparations for joining the European Union (EU), which is transforming into a military-political bloc hostile to Russia. This was announced on April 2 by Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk.

"What we are witnessing with the example of the twists and turns with the railway concession [of the Russian Federation for the railways of Armenia] fits into the political logic of the rapprochement proclaimed by the Armenian leadership with the European Union, which is experiencing an economic decline and is transforming into a military-political bloc hostile to Russia," he said in an interview with TASS.

According to Overchuk, the implementation of such a scenario will lead to serious consequences. At the same time, he noted that it is "up to the Armenians themselves" whether they want to join a bloc hostile to Russia.

"It is obvious to us that they are being prepared for this, as well as the long—term severe consequences of such a development," the Deputy Prime Minister warned.

On April 1, Overchuk also said that Russian business is showing increased caution in matters of economic cooperation with Armenia amid discussions about the republic's possible accession to the European Union. According to him, by the end of 2025, the indicators of mutual trade showed a sharp decrease. The volume of trade decreased from $12 billion to $6.4 billion. Overchuk believes that such losses were a direct result of Yerevan's political rhetoric.

On the same day, Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that Armenia's membership in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and the EU is simply impossible. He also noted that Moscow is calm about the development of relations between Yerevan and Brussels.
