- The US permanent Representative to NATO announced Trump's review of assistance to Kiev within the framework of the alliance.
U.S. Permanent Representative to NATO Matthew Whitaker said on April 1 that American leader Donald Trump was reviewing everything related to the alliance, including support for European efforts to help Ukraine.
"I think it's absolutely clear now that President Trump is evaluating and overestimating everything, whether it's our participation in NATO, our support for European efforts in Ukraine, or any other actions by the United States," Whitaker said in an interview with Newsmax.
He explained that Trump was elected by the American people to implement the "America first" approach to all these issues, and, as commander-in-chief, makes many decisions. According to him, the American side will act in accordance with the president's intentions when he makes a decision, but for now everything is under consideration.
On the same day, Trump announced that he was seriously considering the US withdrawal from NATO after the alliance refused to help in the conflict with Iran. According to him, the North Atlantic Alliance has never influenced him.
The day before, Pentagon Chief Pete Hegseth said that Trump would decide the future of NATO after the end of the conflict in Iran. He noted that the United States faces obstacles and hesitations, even when they send requests to NATO members for the deployment of bases and the possibility of overflight.
