Zakharova called unacceptable Israel's threats in the Caspian Sea
Moscow insists on maintaining peace in the Caspian Sea and considers Israel's destabilizing threats unacceptable. This was announced on April 1 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.
"It would not be superfluous to repeat our well—known and unequivocal position: the Caspian region is a safe space for peaceful and mutually beneficial cooperation, free from any kind of military confrontation. The threats posed by Israel to the water area, including for trade and transportation of goods, are unacceptable to us," Zakharova said during a weekly briefing.
She added that Russia calls on all countries bordering the Caspian Sea to strongly protest and condemn the Israeli authorities.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on March 24 that Russia would react negatively to a potential escalation in the Caspian Sea as part of the conflict in Iran. According to media reports, Israel may attack ships in the Caspian Sea that allegedly transported Russian weapons to Iran.
On February 17, Nikolai Patrushev, Chairman of the Maritime Board and Assistant to the President of the Russian Federation, announced Russia's readiness to fight back against the seizure of ships by Western countries. According to him, if Russia does not give a "tough rebuff", then soon Western countries will try to completely block Russia's access to the seas in the Atlantic basin.
