- The UN announced a possible violation of the law during the attack on the Arctic Metagaz gas carrier
The attack on the Russian gas carrier Arctic Metagaz may constitute a violation of international humanitarian law. This was announced on April 1 by the official representative of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) Marta Hurtado.
She explained that if the attack was committed by one of the parties to the Ukrainian conflict, international humanitarian law would apply to this incident.
"We don't have specific factual information about this incident," Hurtado told TASS.
The OHCHR representative concluded that the norms of international humanitarian law "prohibit attacks against civilian targets."
The attack on the Russian gas carrier Arctic Metagaz near Malta became known on March 4. Later, the Russian Embassy reported that all 30 people who were on board the ship at the time of the attack were rescued by the efforts of the Russian and Maltese sides.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said at the same time that Moscow reserves the right to take political and diplomatic measures in connection with the attack on a Russian gas carrier in the Mediterranean Sea. Russian President Vladimir Putin, in turn, called the strike on the gas carrier a terrorist attack.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov noted on March 5 that Western countries are not even trying to hide Ukraine's involvement in the attack on the Arctic Metagaz gas carrier. He also called the Kiev authorities terrorists. The Egyptian vessel Mardave began towing on March 30.
