NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte's claims about Russia's alleged threat to the alliance's security have no basis in fact. This was announced on April 1 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.

"Russia is identified as the most significant and direct threat to security, peace and stability in the Euro-Atlantic region. Once again, conclusions are being put forward against us that are unfounded, unsubstantiated and, most importantly, are not based on any democratic procedures for obtaining information," Zakharova said at a briefing.

The diplomat noted that Russia has been accused of violating its airspace, subversive activities, and even malicious cyber activity.

She also asked a rhetorical question about the investigation into the explosions of the Nord Stream and Nord Stream—2 gas pipelines. According to Zakharova, these crimes occurred with the infrastructure in which citizens of the Euro-Atlantic region countries invested, and it is the actions of NATO countries that show whose actions actually threaten security.
