The Russian Foreign Ministry warns Russians about the risks of detention by the American authorities in third countries. This was announced on April 1 at a briefing by the official representative of the Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.
"In recent years, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of our country has repeatedly drawn attention to the growing threat of detentions and arrests of Russian citizens in third countries at the request of American law enforcement agencies, which have launched a real hunt for our compatriots around the world," Zakharova said.
The diplomat noted that the number of such cases has already exceeded a hundred and strongly recommended that Russian citizens familiarize themselves with the list of countries with an increased risk of detention. She stressed that US intelligence agencies use fraudulent schemes to lure people of interest abroad for their detention and subsequent extradition to the United States.
"Russian diplomatic and consular offices abroad have always provided, and will continue to provide, and are now providing consular and legal assistance to Russians in need. We will continue to ensure that their legitimate rights and interests are respected," Zakharova added.
On March 27, the Russian Foreign Ministry reported that recently, American intelligence agencies have accelerated the search for Russian citizens around the world.
Prior to that, on December 19 last year, Russians Oleg Olshansky and Sergey Ivin were arrested in Bulgaria at the request of the United States. It was clarified that they are accused of violating US sanctions and money laundering. Later, a Bulgarian court approved Ivin's extradition to the United States. Olshansky's defense had already filed an appeal at that time.
