- The head of the Russian Academy of Sciences named the reason for the onset of a sharply continental climate in the Russian Federation
Global warming has led to climate change in Russia, making it more continental, which is an indisputable fact. This was announced on April 1 by Gennady Krasnikov, head of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), noting that climate change has begun to manifest itself in an increase in the number of natural disasters.
"There are more typhoons, natural disasters related to hurricanes, storms, which, in turn, is due to climate warming," Krasnikov said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
The cooling zone in the northern part of Russia, in particular, according to scientists, has shifted 500 km to the north. Krasnikov explained that Russia is characterized by a continental climate with a large annual temperature range, but in the case of a sharply continental climate, there are stronger temperature fluctuations and less precipitation.
He stressed that it remains to be studied to what extent the impact of warming is related to anthropogenic factors or natural processes.
"If the anthropogenic factor is to blame, then the question arises as to how far we have already passed the point of no return, when restoring nature will be difficult," he added.
An article in Science Daily on March 9 noted that the pace of global warming has accelerated markedly in recent years. The researchers analyzed global temperature data and excluded short-term natural factors that may temporarily increase or decrease the indicators. Such phenomena include volcanic eruptions and changes in solar activity. After adjusting the data, the scientists found for the first time a statistically significant acceleration of long-term warming, which began around 2015.
