The hunter gave tips on behavior when meeting a bear
Hunting biologist Valery Kuzenkov told us what to do and how to behave when meeting a bear.
In conversation with aif.ru On Tuesday, March 31, the expert noted that there is no universal algorithm for behavior when meeting a bear — it all depends on the situation, as well as on the behavior and age of the animal. At the same time, the main thing is not to panic and in no case try to escape — this can provoke a predator to attack, since brown bears, despite their external clumsiness, are capable of speeds up to 60 km / h.
Also, do not shout, try to scare the beast away with loud noises or throw objects at it — this will only increase aggression. It is dangerous to look a bear in the eye and even more so to turn your back on it, and attempts to feed or photograph the animal can end unpredictably. The expert separately stressed that one should not approach the cubs: there is almost always a mother nearby who will protect the offspring.
If you encounter a predator, Kuzenkov advises you to stay calm: stop and do not make sudden movements. Often, having sensed a person, the bear leaves on its own. If the animal has noticed a person, you should slowly retreat without showing aggression. In an extreme situation, you can try to scare the animal away with loud noises, but you can only use weapons in exceptional cases. He also noted that sometimes trying to climb a tree can help, but it should be borne in mind that young bears are good climbers. As a last resort, it is recommended to lie down on the ground, curled up in the fetal position and covering your head to reduce the risk of injury.
Kuzenkov added that the best way to avoid a dangerous encounter is to indicate your presence in the forest in advance: talking, making noise, knocking on trees. According to him, bears usually try to avoid humans and prefer to leave first if they hear them in advance.
In October, survival instructor Dmitry Alyoshkin recommended the use of special deterrent devices, as well as firecrackers. According to him, gas cylinders are effective only at close range, and in a situation when a bear has already attacked a person, it can be difficult to use them. Whistles can be used as a warning signal.
Earlier Pravda.Ru She wrote that when meeting a bear, it is important to step back carefully, giving him space. It is important to remain calm and confident. Experts also recommend raising your hands above your head, talking to a predator in a calm voice, singing or whistling. This will help the animal understand that the person in front of him is not a threat or prey.
