The number of unmanned trucks in Russia will reach 4,000 by 2030
By 2028, the fleet of unmanned trucks will number 992 vehicles, and by the end of 2030 it will exceed 4 thousand units. This was announced by Russian President Vladimir Putin on March 31 during the opening ceremony of the transport industry facilities, which was held via video link.
"And it is very good that we have three companies engaged in this area: Yandex, Navio and KAMAZ. There is also healthy competition in this area, which is very good," he is quoted as saying on the Kremlin's website.
Boris Tashimov, Deputy Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation, said that, according to the plan, from 2028, unmanned trucks will be able to operate on all public roads. The relevant federal law is already being drafted.
The M-12 highway will become the third road where unmanned cargo transportation will be involved. Its launch will connect St. Petersburg and Kazan into a single unmanned transport corridor with the potential for further integration into international transport routes, Tashimov said.
Vitaly Saveliev, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, said that the fleet of highly automated trucks of the third level of automation on public roads has now grown to 95 units. In turn, Transport Minister Andrey Nikitin said that an unmanned truck in pilot mode traveled the route from Kazan to St. Petersburg in 24 hours, while the driver takes 58 hours to do this.
Earlier in the day, Putin launched the movement of unmanned trucks along the M-12 Vostok highway during the opening ceremony of the transport industry facilities, held via video link. The project started with a simultaneous trip along the route of highly automated vehicles.
Last November, the Russian government adopted a decree extending the experimental legal regime (EPR), which allows unmanned trucks to drive on public roads, until 2028. Innovations have appeared in the EPR: the movement of highly automated vehicles (VATS) has become possible without the presence of a person in the cabin.
