A special holiday on April 1 is Daria Gryaznaya: history, traditions, omens
Every year on April 1, Orthodox believers honor the memory of the holy Martyrs Chrysanthos and Darius of Rome, who lived in the III century. In the national calendar, the holiday was named Daria the Dirty — in Russia, this day was associated with spring mud and meltwater. In 2026, it falls on a Wednesday. Read about the history of the celebration, traditions, omens and strict prohibitions in the Izvestia article.
What is the church holiday on April 1st?
Chrysanthus lived in Rome in the third century during the period of persecution of Christians. After reading the New Testament, he came to believe in Christ, sought out Presbyter Carpophorus, who was hiding from persecution, and was baptized by him. After that, he began to openly preach the gospel.
Chrysanthos' father, the pagan Polemius, tried to reason with his son. When persuasion did not help, he decided to marry him to a beautiful girl Daria, a priestess of Pallas Athena. The calculation was simple — the marriage was supposed to distract the young man and return to his former lifestyle.
But the opposite happened. Chrysanthos managed to convert Daria to Christ, and the couple decided by mutual consent to lead a virgin life. After Polemy's death, they settled separately. The husband gathered around him young men who had converted to Christianity, and the wife gathered pious women. Their personal choice gradually turned into an open sermon, visible to the whole city.
However, zealous pagans denounced the couple to the authorities, accusing them of preaching celibacy. The couple were captured. In order to return Chrysanthos to paganism, the tribune Claudius sentenced him to torture, but they did not break him. As noted in the life, the courage of the young Christian so impressed the ruler that he himself believed in Jesus.
Claudius was baptized with his wife Hilaria, his sons Jason and Mavros, as well as with his household and soldiers. For the Roman authorities, this already looked like a dangerous spread of Christianity among people involved in public service. Emperor Numerian ordered the execution of all converts.
Meanwhile, Daria was sent to a house of debauchery, hoping to humiliate and force her to renounce her faith. But, according to church tradition, the saint was guarded by a lion sent by God. He knocked down everyone who tried to approach her, but did not kill anyone. The girl continued to talk to people about Christ.
Chrysanthos was subjected to another ordeal — he was thrown into a pit where urban sewage flowed. However, as the life tells us, instead of a stench, it was filled with fragrance. Neither fear nor torment forced the couple to renounce their faith.
After much torture, Chrysanthos and Daria were buried alive in the ground. Christians began to gather in a cave near the place of execution to perform divine services and remember the martyrs on the day of their death. When the pagan authorities found out about these meetings, they ordered the entrance to the shelter to be filled in. As a result, many believers died.
Traditions of the national holiday Daria Gryaznaya on April 1
In Russia, the memorial day of Saints Chrysanthus and Daria was called Daria the Dirty, or simply Daria. The holiday got its name because of the spring thaw. By the beginning of April, the snow was actively melting, the roads were moving, and mud was accumulating around the ice holes and off the coast.
The ancestors believed that the day seemed to test a person — to those who lived with bad thoughts and a guilty conscience, he was especially unkind, whereas kind and straightforward people, according to beliefs, Daria did not touch.
According to tradition, believers went to the temple in the morning, prayed to Saints Chrysanthus and Daria, asking them for health, family harmony and fidelity. The martyrs were asked for peace in the home, because in the popular imagination their story was connected not only with the feat of faith, but also with the purity of marital relations.
In the old days, it was customary to whitewash canvases on Daria Dirty. The women laid out the cloth on the ground, under the bright spring sun it became lighter, and from the night and morning frost it became softer. Experienced housewives told the young ones: "Make a cross for frosts."
According to legend, the brownie woke up after winter on Daria the Dirty. So that he would not get angry, they tried to appease him — they left bread, milk, pies, honey. But one treat wasn't enough, the keeper of the house should also be made to laugh. If this was successful, peace, tranquility and harmony reigned in the family for a long time.
This is where another famous tradition of the day comes from — practical jokes. On April 1, it was customary in Russia to make fun of relatives, neighbors and acquaintances, invent tall tales and arrange malicious deceptions.
The girls especially tried. It was believed that the more people they could prank on that day, the fewer lies there would be on the part of the future groom. Therefore, festive cheerfulness was perceived not just as fun, but as part of girls' hopes for a happy and honest family life.
What not to do on a holiday Daria Dirty
In Russia, Daria Gryaznaya was associated with a number of restrictions, the violation of which could deprive a person of luck and joy. First of all, despondency was forbidden on this day. According to beliefs, on April 1, one should not be sad, cry and give in to gloomy thoughts, otherwise the whole year will pass in sadness.
What else you can't do on April 1st:
- wearing old, worn—out clothes leads to trouble and poverty;
- unmarried girls turn around at a woman's call — the engagement may be delayed or disrupted, but if a man calls, this is a good sign foreshadowing the wedding.;
- to be lazy and postpone household chores — April Fool's idleness promises failure.
