Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, professor at the Moscow Energy Institute and climatologist Vladimir Klimenko told what kind of weather is expected in the summer of 2026.

In conversation with aif.ru On Tuesday, March 31, the specialist said that last summer in Russia was remembered for sudden weather fluctuations and anomalies — the media actively wrote about this. Moscow and other cities have experienced tropical downpours, temperature fluctuations and other unusual phenomena. It looks like you'll have to get used to this weather.

He noted that sudden weather changes have become the norm: the modern climate is characterized by instability, and extreme events are associated with global warming. According to him, the summer of 2026 in Central Russia is unlikely to be among the hottest in history, but it may be in the top ten. He also stressed that over the past 50 years, the average summer temperature in Moscow has increased by about 2.5 degrees, which significantly affects the change of seasons.

The expert added that the capital is not threatened by the tropical climate: despite the feeling of frequent rains, the climate in Russia remains relatively dry. Precipitation is decreasing, but it is becoming more intense — heavy downpours are possible, but they are far from the real tropical indicators. At the same time, the average summer temperature, according to his estimates, will exceed the norm by about 1.5 degrees.

Klimenko also warned about heat waves, when the heat lasts for several days in a row and increases every day. Such periods can be exhausting and dangerous, so the specialist advises you to take care of overheating protection in advance, including using air conditioners.

On March 23, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) recognized the past decade as the warmest in the entire 176-year history of observations on land and in the ocean. During 2025, national temperature maxima were updated in several countries at once.

Vladimir Semenov, Head of the Laboratory of Climatology at the Institute of Geography of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, said Pravda.Ru The adaptation of the urban environment to a changing climate is of key importance to ensure the safety and well-being of residents. He called for giving priority attention to the formation of extensive green spaces and water bodies.
