In Russia, omens have been given special importance since ancient times. They were used to judge the weather, when to sow and harvest, and what to expect in the future. Therefore, every day of the national calendar was full of rituals and superstitions. Izvestia tells about the popular signs of April 2 and what church holidays are celebrated on this day.

Folk signs for April 2

In Russia, on April 2, the Fotinya Kolodeznitsa holiday was celebrated. The day symbolized the beginning of the active awakening of nature, when spring waters are filled with life-giving energy after winter. It was believed that it was at this time that water acquired a special power capable of healing diseases and protecting against ailments. Therefore, they went to wells, springs and rivers on Fotinha to get fresh water.

The sick used it as medicine, the healthy — to protect themselves from illness and keep vigor. Well or spring water was sprinkled on the yard, house and garden beds, hoping to protect the farm from pests and spoilage, and at the same time to summon a good harvest. The people said: "Fotinha saves water — it leads spring to summer" and "Clean water on Fotinha — to health for the whole year."

In some regions, it was customary to throw a coin or bread into the water as a sign of gratitude to nature. It was also customary to clean wells, remove debris around them and check their condition. These rituals reflected respect for natural forces and the desire to maintain harmony with the outside world.

Weather observations were also associated with this day, which helped predict the upcoming changes. For example, if the water in the well became transparent, they expected a warm and clear spring. A lot of meltwater in the fields promised lush grass growth in May. And the rainy weather foreshadowed a rich harvest of mushrooms.

Other signs of the day:

  • a quiet and clear day leads to steady warmth;
  • The sun disappears behind a haze — to rain;
  • Clouds are moving against the wind, and birds are circling in the sky — leading to heavy precipitation in the coming days.;
  • a cat sleeps curled up in a ball, which leads to a cold snap, and if it asks to go outside, it leads to a warming;
  • birds build their nests on the sunny side — for a cold summer;
  • there is still snow on the ground in a dense layer — the year will be fruitful.

What not to do on April 2nd

There were also certain prohibitions on the Fotinya Well, which were primarily associated with water. It was believed that disrespectful attitude towards sources could lead to illnesses and failures. People tried not to pollute the wells, not to throw garbage into the water, and not to use it unnecessarily. They were also afraid of quarrels and conflicts by the water, as they believed that negative emotions could "pollute" its energy.

What else can not be done on April 2:

  • leaving the house in disarray leads to failures;
  • counting money leads to loss of wealth, prolonged need;
  • Sharing plans and secrets — your plans may not come true;
  • offend and slaughter chickens and ducks — the bird will stop laying and giving offspring;
  • It is believed that it is more difficult to get married after showing a dowry to girls.

What is the church holiday on April 2?

On April 2 (March 20, Old style), the Orthodox Church honors the memory of Saint Fotina Samaritani, a woman with whom, according to the Gospel, Jesus Christ conversed at Jacob's well. According to church tradition, after meeting with the Savior, Fotina left her former life and devoted herself to preaching.

She went to different cities, where she talked about Christ and converted people to Christianity. The saint managed to convert Domnina, the daughter of Emperor Nero, and 100 of her slaves to Christ. Upon learning of this, the ruler, in a rage, ordered to strip the skin from Fotina and throw her into a well, where she died. Fotina's steadfastness and courage made her one of the most revered martyrs.

On the same day, they remember St. Euphrosyne of Sinozero, Novgorod (in the world, Ephraim Simenov)— a Russian monk and founder of the Sinozero desert. He was born in Karelia near Lake Ladoga. In his youth, he lived at the Valaam Monastery, and then moved to Novgorod the Great.

Later, seeking solitude, the monk went to the desert on the shore of Sinichy Lake, where he erected a cross, dug a cave, and for two years ate only wild plants. Over time, the brethren gathered around him, and a monastery was built, which became the spiritual center of the region and a refuge for believers during the Time of Troubles.

In 1612, Euphrosyne suffered martyrdom at the hands of the Polish invaders. After his death, he was canonized. His canonization took place in 1912. The Russian Orthodox Church commemorates the saint three times a year: on April 2, the day of his death, as well as in the Cathedrals of the Novgorod and Karelian saints.

Prayers on April 2

Saint Fotina is traditionally approached with requests for help in spiritual enlightenment, finding a way of life, and gaining patience in life's trials. Women often resort to her intercession, asking to restore peace and mutual understanding in the family. They pray to St. Euphrosyne for deliverance from bodily and mental illnesses, protection from enemies and ill-wishers. It is also believed that prayers. those who turn to him help to find harmony and strengthen the spirit.

Prayer to Fotina Samaritana

"Oh, Holy Martyr Photinia! You are inspired immensely by your love for Christ, and you have shown great courage, patience, and strength with your sisters, sons, and those who are enlightened by you. She preached the gospel of Christ with boldness, and Christ appeared to you and to all who were with you, and strengthened and comforted all for the coming torments. Having come to Rome and fearlessly confessed Christ, you were imprisoned, and endured many torments, thrown into a well, and gave your soul to the Lord. Hear us, Holy Photinia, who shone forth with spiritual beauty and unceasingly taught people the faith in Christ in prison and in the cities. Hearken to us, looking at us sinners, and by the grace of Christ heal those who are sick with fever, so that the rain of sin may not sprinkle them, but they will spend their lives in mental and physical health, relentlessly in good deeds, and glorify the Lord of all, the Father of Generosity, the Merciful God, for all ages. Amen to that."

Prayer to Euphrosyne of Sinozero

"O Holy Martyr Euphrosyne! Hear our fervent supplication to you. Protect and preserve through your holy prayers all this and all the springs and cities of our Orthodox fatherland from gladness, cowardice, flood, fire, sword, invasion of foreigners, internecine warfare and deadly plagues, from all misfortune, sorrow and evil. Beseech the Lord God and our Saviour to grant peace to His Church, under the sign of the Militant Cross, through your intercession help our archpastor and pastor to rule the word of the truth of the Gospel, and ask all Orthodox Christians for forgiveness of their sins, voluntary and involuntary, while through your intercession grant healing from their ailments, so that the most honorable and magnificent name of the Most Holy may be glorified for your sake. Of the Trinity, of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen to that."
