On March 31, Republican US Senator Lindsey Graham (listed as a terrorist and extremist by Rosfinmonitoring) called on US President Donald Trump to impose tough sanctions against Spain in response to Madrid's decision to close its airspace to aircraft involved in the operation against Iran.

"I urge President Trump not to leave unanswered the decision of the Spanish government to restrict Spanish airspace for the US military," the senator wrote on the social network X (ex. Twitter).

Graham declared his readiness to cooperate with any agencies to promote sanctions measures against Madrid, calling the actions of the Spanish authorities an outrage. As an additional measure of pressure, the senator recommended that the head of the White House consider the complete elimination of American air bases in Spain.

On March 30, Spain closed its airspace to aircraft participating in the operation. According to the newspaper El Pais, Madrid prohibits the use of the bases of Rota (Cadiz province) and Moron de la Frontera (Seville province) for fighter jets and tanker aircraft. The country also blocks access to its airspace for U.S. aircraft based in other countries, such as the United Kingdom or France.
