- The psychologist spoke about the impact of grades for behavior on the development of students
The introduction of a formalized assessment of behavior in the school system requires a special approach that takes into account not only discipline, but also the psychological aspect. Maria Todorova, a child psychologist and consultant on children's education, told Izvestia about this on March 30.
According to her, the assessment of behavior remains subjective, since the interpretation of criteria depends on the personality of the teacher, his expectations and the level of professional training.
"The introduction of a formalized assessment of behavior in school is a step that requires special care, since it is not only about discipline, but also about the psychological climate, the rights of the child and the philosophy of education itself," the psychologist said.
As the expert noted, it is possible to reduce this subjectivity only if clear, observable and measurable indicators are introduced. It can be about fixing specific behavioral episodes: observing the rules in the classroom, not violating them for a certain amount of time, and participating in school life without conflict.
According to Todorova, an important tool can be a collective assessment, when several teachers participate in the formation of the final score. There may also be elements of student self-assessment and feedback from the class, but these mechanisms require careful methodological adjustment so as not to turn into a pressure tool.
The psychologist noted that it is impossible to exclude bias, especially regarding the criteria of communication and social activity. Children can show different temperaments: someone is active, someone is withdrawn. It is important to keep in mind that the child's behavior is related to his sense of security and trust in an adult. If a child does not engage in communication, this may not be a violation, but a signal of internal tension.
Todorova believes that the key factor is the teacher's figure, and that the main task of a teacher is to build relationships based on respect and consistency. Only then can we talk about an objective assessment of behavior. Without trust, any criteria will be perceived as pressure, Todorova concluded.
On March 22, Inga Gorbunova, an expert at the Ministry of Education, a teacher-psychologist from St. Petersburg, the author of the educational project "Cool Parent", said that in order to support children before passing the Unified State Exam, it is important to give them your love and remind them that the results of the Unified State Exam do not affect the attitude towards them in the family. She also recommended that parents take care of the child's physical condition — to remind them about proper nutrition and proper sleep. It is also important to think about passing exams more often.
