Moscow has developed an artificial intelligence (AI)-based tool that checks the quality of chest X-rays during the procedure. This was stated by Anastasia Rakova, Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Social Development.

Artificial intelligence in Moscow medicine is already solving not only diagnostic, but also control tasks, said Rakova. "A new development of the capital's scientists is a tool for automatically checking the quality of chest X—rays. This is one of the most widespread studies, and now we will be able to assess its correctness right during the procedure, in an average of 17 seconds," said the vice mayor.

Previously, the X-ray technician controlled the quality manually and could notice the error after the patient left, Rakova recalled. The neural network immediately analyzes the snapshot: it checks the correctness of the layout and the correctness of filling in the data. "If something is wrong, the system immediately signals, and the specialist can retake the picture on the spot without inviting the patient again. This will not only save time, but also reduce the radiation load on the body," explained the deputy mayor.

A pilot project based on three Moscow clinics has confirmed the effectiveness of the approach, Rakova said. The accuracy of image quality assessment reached 94%, and the detection of errors in the data reached 99%. Automating the process will allow radiologists to work with verified images without wasting time describing poor-quality images.

Moscow has been digitalizing the healthcare system for more than a decade. Doctors have at their disposal more than 60 AI services in 43 clinical areas. The experiment on the introduction of computer vision is being implemented by specialists from the Center for Diagnostics and Telemedicine in cooperation with the Department of Information Technology. The project is in line with the objectives of the Moscow Medicine development strategy until 2030.
