Journalist Andrey Soldatov (recognized as a foreign agent in the territory of the Russian Federation) was sentenced to four years in a general regime penal colony by the decision of the Basmanny Court of Moscow in a case of evading the duties of a foreign agent and participating in an undesirable organization. This was announced on March 30 by the Moscow prosecutor's office.
"Criminal case <...> it was considered by the court in the general procedure of criminal proceedings in the absence of the defendant, who is wanted," the department's Telegram channel says.
It is clarified that Soldatov has already been brought to administrative responsibility under Part 2 of Article 19.34 of the Administrative Code of the Russian Federation ("Violation of the procedure for the activities of a foreign agent"), as well as under Article 20.33 of the Administrative Code of the Russian Federation ("Participation in a foreign organization in respect of which a decision has been taken to declare undesirable on the territory of the Russian Federation"). After leaving the Russian Federation, he continued to distribute materials online without indicating that he was a foreign agent.
He is also prohibited from administering Internet sites for the same period. The lawyer of the accused announced his intention to appeal the verdict of the court.
On March 27, the court sentenced 59-year-old journalist and political scientist Sergei Medvedev in absentia (recognized as a foreign agent in the Russian Federation), sentencing him to 11.5 years in prison. He was found guilty under Part 2 of Article 330.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Evading the duties of a foreign agent").
