The potential successors of American leader Donald Trump, US Vice President Jay Dee Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, have taken different positions on the conflict in Iran, which may affect their prospects for the 2028 presidential election and support for the current head of the country. This was reported on March 29 by the Reuters news agency.

"With the next presidential election scheduled for 2028 and term limits preventing Trump from running again, the president is privately discussing succession with allies and advisers, asking: "J.D. or Marco?" the agency writes, citing two anonymous sources.

Reuters recalls that Vance has taken a cautious stance on Iran, which reflects his skepticism about a potential prolonged US military intervention. At the same time, Rubio "became closely associated with Trump's hawkish position" and became "one of the most ardent defenders of the campaign" in the administration of the American president.

"According to political analysts and representatives of the Republican Party, the outcome of the American military operation, which has been going on for the fifth week, may affect the prospects of both candidates in the 2028 presidential election," the article says.

A quick end to the Middle East conflict, beneficial for Washington, could strengthen Rubio's position. A protracted war with Iran would be a trump card for Vance.

Some Republicans claim that Trump is leaning more towards Rubio. However, they also note that the head of the White House may change his mind.

The Daily Mail reported on March 24 that Rubio is increasingly being viewed as Trump's successor in the 2028 presidential election, while Vance's rating is declining. According to a Daily Mail poll, Rubio's rating has increased by three points over the past month, to 17%, which has strengthened his position in second place, just behind Vance, who still ranks first.

On January 22, Trump said that the Republican Party already has a "strong bench" of politicians who could run for the 2028 elections and continue his political legacy. The American leader also confirmed that he does not plan to run for a third term in 2028.
