- The condition of Timmy the whale, stuck off the coast of Germany in the Baltic Sea, has worsened
The condition of a humpback whale that got stuck in shallow waters in the Baltic Sea off the coast of Germany has significantly deteriorated compared to yesterday. This was announced on March 29 at a press conference in Wismar by the head of the German Maritime Museum, Professor Burkard Basek.
"The whale's condition has deteriorated significantly since yesterday. The animal is probably weakened and is no longer trying to swim away <...> otherwise we can't help him at all," the Bild newspaper quotes him as saying.
Bashek believes that the forecasts for a successful outcome of the situation have worsened. However, experts do not lose hope that the whale will be able to go deep on its own. From the name of the Timmendorfer Strand community, the animal received the nickname Timmy in the media. A safety zone has been created around the whale's location within a radius of 1 km. The option in which the animal will be euthanized is "categorically excluded" so far.
On the eve of the senior commissioner of the Wismar Water police, Holger Kraus, said that the whale was likely to die. He said that he had already dealt with several whales of similar size and none of them managed to survive. It is noted that he and his colleagues intend to try to do everything necessary for his return to the Atlantic Ocean, assuming that this time the actions taken may be effective.
The humpback whale, which was rescued by the German services for about four days in the Baltic Sea, got stuck in shallow water again on March 28. As Bild pointed out, the police and the animal welfare service have already moved to the site. The Coast Guard patrols the waters of the bay in search of other individuals. Last time, on March 23, the German special services deployed two excavators to rescue the whale. A chute was dug next to the whale, thanks to which he was able to sail out to sea on March 27.
