By 2050, almost half of the world's population may experience nearsightedness, but the main factor in vision impairment may not be blue light from gadgets, but distance from the screen. This was announced on March 29 by Ekaterina Bayandina, ophthalmologist at the Atribyut clinic.

"Indeed, laboratory studies were conducted in which isolated retinal cells were exposed to extreme doses of blue light, which led to their death. But in real life, the intensity of blue radiation from smartphones is about a thousand times weaker than from natural daylight. That is, screens do not emit enough energy to harm vision. <...> Using gadgets in the evening deceives the brain, simulating daylight, which physiologically lengthens the phase of falling asleep and reduces the quality of night rest," she said in an interview with the newspaper.Ru».

She explained that blue light primarily affects human biological rhythms, not visual acuity.

The expert noted that smartphones and computers create additional strain on the eyes due to the proximity of the screens. With regular and prolonged strain, the eyeball gradually lengthens, which leads to the development of myopia.

According to Bayandina, reading books at close range causes a similar effect, especially if the text is small or poorly contrasted. She added that prolonged attention to an object without interruptions causes visual fatigue depending on the device.

To preserve vision, the doctor recommended placing the monitor at arm's length, pausing every 20 minutes, and avoiding working behind a bright screen in the dark.

Anastasia Kotelnikova, ophthalmologist at the SM Clinic, PhD, told on March 19 that she gave tips on protecting her eyes from the March sun. To protect your eyes from the spring Sun, the specialist recommended wearing sunglasses with UV protection. She recommended using moisturizing eye drops, which contain antioxidants that help reduce exposure to solar radiation and accelerate cell repair.
