In Dagestan, the situation with sanitation has worsened due to illegal development.
Illegal construction in the Republic of Dagestan does not allow efficient drainage of water from the streets of cities. This was announced on March 28 by Governor Sergey Melikov.
"There is a problem with sanitation. <...> All of our drains are already overflowing, including those channels that are used as water drainage channels. <...> This, of course, is again the problem that has been getting worse for years — this is illegal construction, including the construction of protected areas", — said Melikov.
He added that due to illegally erected structures, special services officers are not always able to drive up to the elements of the drainage system to clean them. According to Melikov, the "most alarming" situation is developing in Makhachkala and Kaspiysk.
On this day, the republic's administration introduced a high-alert regime due to rains, it will be in effect until Monday. On March 28, the head of Dagestan said that heavy rain and wind had created a critical situation in many districts and cities of the republic. A railway bridge has already collapsed on the territory of the republic, and rising waters in the Yaryk-Su River have restricted traffic on automobile and pedestrian bridges.
