As a result of tropical cyclone Narell, which struck the western part of Australia, the sky and rivers in the region turned a rich red hue. This was reported on March 28 by The New Daily.

It is noted that the unusual color was the result of a chemical reaction: the storm front passed through arid semi-desert regions, the soil of which is rich in iron oxides. Gusts of wind removed the top protective layer of the earth, and rain streams washed it away into reservoirs.

The cyclone hit the coast near Coral Bay as a category three storm and then shifted towards the city of Carnarvon, where it caused a powerful dust storm. The greatest impact of the disaster fell on the resort town of Exmouth, where the wind speed exceeded 250 km/ h.

As a result of the disaster, residential buildings and infrastructure facilities were damaged, roofs were torn off, windows were blown out, power outages and flooding were recorded. In one of the evacuation centers, where about 40 people were staying, the hurricane tore off part of the roof — due to dangerous weather conditions, people could not be evacuated, and they waited out the storm inside the damaged building. It is also reported about the destruction of a gas station. The emergency services warn that the scale of the damage may be significant.

A similar phenomenon was recorded in the Middle East in December last year. The Daily Mail (DM) newspaper, reporting on the blood-tinged reservoirs of the Persian Gulf, called it a biblical sign of the approaching end of the world. The text recalled that the Christian Holy Scriptures said that when the seas and rivers change their color, the end of all time will come. However, there was also a scientific explanation for what happened. So, the authors of the material also referred to the effect of the interaction of rainwater with iron oxide.
