The Supreme Court will consider a claim to recognize Memorial as an extremist organization.

The Supreme Court of Russia has accepted an application for recognition of the international public movement Memorial (recognized as a foreign agent in the Russian Federation) as an extremist organization. This was reported on March 27 in the press service of the instance.

"The Supreme Court of Russia has accepted for trial as a court of first instance an application recognizing the international public movement Memorial as an extremist organization and banning its activities on the territory of the Russian Federation," the IACH said in a statement.

It is specified that the case will be considered in a closed court session.

On December 28, 2021, the Supreme Court of Russia liquidated the Memorial Society. The claim for the liquidation of the organization was filed by the Prosecutor General's Office. The ministry pointed out that Memorial systematically violated the legislation of the Russian Federation, and also allowed the activities of supporters of terrorist and extremist organizations to be justified.

During the court session, the prosecutor pointed out that the organization, in the course of its activities, seeks to rehabilitate Nazi criminals, as well as discredit the state authorities of the Russian Federation and create a false image of the USSR as a terrorist state.
