Potatoes can be planted as early as the first decade of May. However, you should pay attention to the soil: the readiness of the site depends on the amount of moisture in the ground. Vladimir Vikulov, chief agronomist of the Timiryazev Academy and director of the Michurinsky Gardens, told Izvestia about this.

According to the expert, it is possible to determine the exact time when tubers are best sent to the ground without special devices, using folk agronomic wisdom.

"There is an old peasant way: the time of planting potatoes often coincides with the flowering of cherry trees. This is usually the first decade of May," Vikulov said.

However, according to the expert, it is not worth focusing solely on dates or visual signs, such as snowmelt. Vladimir Vikulov warns: before you start planting potatoes, you need to make sure that the soil is ready.

"Not only should the snow come off, but the excess moisture from the soil should go away," the expert emphasizes.

The agronomist draws attention to the fact that the type of soil on the site directly affects the timing of the start of work. On different soils, the drying process occurs at different rates.

"For example, let's take two sites: clay and sandy soil. The snow has gone both ways, but excessive moisture remains on the clay and it is very difficult to work on the site. And the sandy soil will already be ready for spring processing. Such nuances need to be determined purely mechanically. It is necessary to look at the fact," Vikulov explains.
