- The expert spoke about working in the garden for the May holidays in the Moscow region
During the May holidays, it will be possible to plant cold-resistant crops in the Moscow region. However, it is worth focusing not only on the weather, but also on the degree of drying of the soil and the readiness of the site for processing. Vladimir Vikulov, director of the Michurinsky Gardens and chief agronomist of the Timiryazev Academy, told Izvestia about this.
According to the Yandex Weather service, the May holidays will delight Muscovites with warm weather: the average daytime temperature will be +15 degrees. Nevertheless, the expert notes that warm weather is not yet a guarantee of fruitful carrying out of all types of gardening. According to the expert, first of all it is necessary to separate crops according to their resistance to cold.
"Early-ripening and late-ripening cabbage varieties are the first to be planted. It is possible to plant spring garlic and onions both as sowing and as planting seedlings. For example, lovers of leeks are more often grown through seedlings and planted," the agronomist told Izvestia.
The specialist emphasizes that these plants have sufficient cold resistance, so they can be planted from the end of April, especially when using any shelters.
The situation is quite different with heat-loving crops, which many summer residents plan to plant on holidays. Vladimir Vikulov warns: you should not rush with cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers and eggplants.
"If we talk about heat-loving crops, cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, then their planting is possible no earlier than the middle of May. And you should definitely count on shelter, as frosts are known to be possible until the first days of June. And these crops are thermophilic and do not tolerate the slightest disadvantage," the expert emphasized.
The agronomist calls the attempt to focus solely on the disappearance of snow cover one of the main misconceptions of summer residents. Even if the snow on the site has completely melted by the beginning of the May holidays, this does not mean that the soil is ready for planting.
"Not only should the snow come off, but the excess moisture from the soil should go away. For example, let's take two sites: clay and sandy soil. The snow has gone both ways, but excessive moisture remains on the clay and it is very difficult to work on the site. And the sandy soil will already be ready for spring processing," Vikulov explained.
The expert insists that each landowner should make an individual decision on the start of work.
"Such nuances need to be determined purely mechanically. It is necessary to look at the facts," the agronomist concluded.
