On March 26, Argentine journalist Gaston Edul reported on possible changes to the rules of the International Federation of Football Associations (FIFA) ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

He published a post in X (ex. Twitter), in which he said that FIFA intends to introduce quick substitutions, during which the replaced player must leave the field within 10 seconds, otherwise the other will have to wait a minute, leaving the team to play with a small squad.

Edul also spoke about medical care: a player receiving medical care must leave the field for one minute. The exception is an injury that was caused by a foul.

He added that a five-second timer will be used for face-offs and goal kicks.

Edul noted that the referee's Video Assistant system (VAR) will now be able to view the second yellow cards that lead to a red card, as well as the wrongly awarded corners.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on February 26 that FIFA President Gianni Infantino had confirmed his confidence in Mexico ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. According to her, she had a telephone conversation with the FIFA president, during which they discussed the continuation of work for the successful holding of the World Cup.
