Experts assessed the potential of launching 5G networks on existing frequencies

Technological neutrality, which implies the possibility of using existing frequencies for technologies of different generations of communication, can become a key tool for the mass deployment of 5G networks by mobile operators in Russia. This was reported by Vigo experts who investigated the potential for launching 5G technology.

According to the study, there are two technological scenarios for launching 5G on the frequencies currently used for LTE networks. The first involves the use of DSS technology, in which the same frequency is used simultaneously for both 4G and 5G. The second scenario is based on refarming, i.e. partial conversion of the frequency range to 5G. At the same time, if the use of DDS leads to a decrease in network efficiency by 10-20%, then refarming, on the contrary, allows you to use the radio resource much more productively.

Telecom experts interviewed by RBC mostly agreed with Vigo's assessment. So, the representative of Megafon noted that at the moment the company has the technical capabilities to launch 5G, but not all users will be able to evaluate it.:

"In most bands, we have the necessary spectrum for 5G development, but final decisions will be made taking into account the current usage of 4G networks and frequency allocation. One of these models, the application of the principle of technological neutrality, can really expand the possibilities for launching 5G, but it is inferior to the "golden range" in terms of speed. It is also worth considering that in the early stages of 5G implementation, only about 12% of users who own smartphones that support this technology will be able to test the technology," said a Megafon representative.

According to a representative of Vimpelcom (Beeline brand), there will be no increase in speeds without allocating new frequencies. "But technocracy is a good first step to understand how the market is responding to 5G," he noted.
