The psychologist explained the desire of zoomers to abandon megacities
The generation of zoomers is increasingly choosing to live in the regions, avoiding megacities. Psychologist Veronika Akhmetova explained to Izvestia on March 27 what motivates young people to make such a choice and how the changed priorities affect their self-esteem and ambitions.
According to the expert, modern young professionals increasingly prefer to live in regions rather than in megacities, which is a noticeable trend in recent years. Unlike previous generations, for whom moving to Moscow or St. Petersburg was a desire for independence and career growth, the zoomers are abandoning the race for success.
As the psychologist noted, these changes are related to the psychological peculiarity of the generation. Zoomers grew up in an environment of high turbulence: the pandemic, geopolitical events, and economic changes shaped their perception of the world.
"A megacity is like a gamer's stimulation, yes, high tempo, insane competition, constant information overload, noise, crowd. In general, it causes chronic stress and emotional burnout for many people. And regions are a way to reduce this level of stress, cortisol, to regain control over your own life, where you influence circumstances, and not they control you," the specialist explained.
In addition, the motivations of young people have changed. Now zoomers prefer to work remotely, which gives them the opportunity to live in more peaceful places, receiving salaries from the capital. The distance work market has opened up new opportunities for young people, and this also contributes to the choice of regions as more suitable for life.
Nevertheless, there is a risk of a feeling of lost opportunities, especially among those who refuse to live in a megalopolis. Giving up the race for success in the big city may be caused by an inner search for harmony and contentment, rather than a sense of failure. The reassessment of values, the abandonment of the traditional desire for status in the metropolis and the focus on the internal ecology are becoming important aspects for young people, the expert concluded.
On March 25, Artemy Shurygin, President of the Russian Guild of Realtors (RGR), said that in Russia, due to the development of remote employment and government support for historical settlements, a trend began to form for the relocation of citizens from large to small towns and villages. It was noted that residents of megacities are more likely to buy real estate in small towns, attracted by lower prices and a calm environment.
