Candidate of Agricultural Sciences Sergey Palchikov told how to properly collect birch sap.

In an interview with Radio 1 on Wednesday, March 25, he noted that responsibility for collecting birch sap is not a myth: fines are indeed imposed and depend on the place of damage to the tree. According to him, in the city they usually amount to about 3.5–4 thousand rubles, in specially protected areas — up to 1.5 thousand, and in general they can vary from 1 thousand to 4 thousand rubles, depending on the consequences.

He added that problems can be avoided by following simple rules. In particular, it is important to choose trees away from roads and industrial areas, as they can accumulate harmful substances, and the best time to harvest is from 10:00 to 13:00 on sunny days. The expert stressed that with a careful approach, sap harvesting does not harm the tree.

The specialist also recalled that the rules may vary depending on the region, and the most common mistake is damage to the trunk. He explained that only one shallow hole up to 5 cm should be made, and after harvesting, it must be closed and treated with a protective agent.

On the same day, biologist Dmitry Safonov told 360.ru He said that it is better to choose trees with a trunk diameter of about 20-25 cm to collect birch sap, as sap movement is most active in them. The number of holes depends on the thickness: the thicker the trunk, the more holes there may be, but they need to be done carefully so that the tree can recover faster, the website writes kp.ru .

Evgeny Masharov, a member of the commission of the Civic Chamber of the Russian Federation for the public examination of draft laws and other regulations, warned on March 21 that a plucked snowdrop could result in a fine of up to 1 million rubles or even up to four years for a Russian citizen. The expert noted that the punishment is related to the rarity of the plant and its presence in the Red Book of the Russian Federation.

In September, Senator Olga Epifanova, chairman of the all-Russian social movement Social Democratic Union of Women of Russia, told RT that Russia had introduced new regulations governing the protection of rare and endangered plant species listed in the Red Books of Russia and the regions. The authorities or relevant services must be informed within ten days of the discovery of such plants.
