Cats mask discomfort, and owners often notice a problem with their pet's teeth when serious help is needed. Olga Tereshko, a veterinarian, dentist and expert of the SUPERPET natural food manufacturer, told about this on Wednesday, March 25.

The veterinarian noted that with toothache, a pet can chew only on one side, drop pieces, shake its head, meow when trying to chew food, or refuse to eat, preferring soft food.

"The second common sign is bad breath, which indicates inflammation, infection, or decomposition of tissues in the oral cavity. It can also indicate gingivitis, periodontitis, or even tumor processes," Tereshko explained in an interview with Lenta.Ru .

The expert noted that if a cat rubs its muzzle against furniture or strokes itself, as if trying to get something out of its mouth, it means it is trying to relieve pain or itching in the gums. In this case, you can look for redness, sores and discharge in the oral cavity. Pets also develop apathy or aggression, weight loss and deterioration of coat quality, as the cat stops caring for itself, Tereshko added.

"An infection from a diseased tooth can enter the bloodstream and affect internal organs — the heart, kidneys, liver. In severe cases, abscesses and osteomyelitis of the jaw develop," Tereshko emphasized.

The veterinarian warned that toothache in cats does not disappear without treatment. She advised to contact a specialist immediately if there are at least two such signs.

Earlier that day, AlphaPet veterinarian Daria Bogdanova told Izvestia that a cat's refusal to eat could be a signal of health problems, stress, or changes in diet.

According to the expert, loss of appetite in cats is most often a symptom, not a whim. 360.ru . She noted that cats tend to hide their pain, so refusing to eat may be one of the few noticeable signs of distress. The causes may be pain, intoxication, or infectious diseases. For example, decreased appetite is observed in diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, kidneys, or viral infections when the animal's body is weakened.
