The early awakening of insects in 2026 is already noticeable in the Moscow region. Olga Trofimova, Associate Professor of the Department of General Biology and Bioecology at the State University of Education, told Izvestia on March 25 which species are activated earlier.

According to the expert, insects are poikilothermic animals, meaning their vital functions depend on the ambient temperature.

"As soon as the nighttime temperatures stop dropping below zero and the length of daylight increases, the insects get out of hiding," explained Trofimova.

As the biologist noted, those species that overwinter in the adult insect stage (imago) are activated initially. These may be such pioneers as some beetles, lemongrass, urticaria, and daytime peacock's eye. These insects are not dangerous to plants, as they practically do not feed, but lay eggs and then die.

She also added that at the end of April, we should expect the awakening of the May beetles. At the same time, herbivorous insects, including pests, are activated somewhat later, when plant food sources appear.

"The early awakening of insects does not mean a sharp increase in their numbers," the expert said.

However, this year it is important to carry out preventive treatments in advance to prevent an increase in the number of pests, not to thicken the planting and not overfeed the plants with nitrogen. It is also necessary to attract a variety of living helpers to the garden, vegetable garden and flower garden, such as ladybugs, goldeneye, lizards and toads, the expert concluded.

Biologist Dmitry Safonov said on March 19 that an invasion of dangerous mutant ticks resistant to hunger, extreme weather conditions and aerosol sprays had been recorded in southern Russia. We are talking about ticks that are resistant to heat, are able to winter in Russia and go without food for a long time. According to the expert, their bite, in addition to the standard symptoms, can lead to the development of Congo-Crimean hemorrhagic fever.
