March 25 — Cultural Worker's Day: history, traditions, how to congratulate
Every year on March 25 in Russia, employees of museums, libraries, theaters, concert organizations, book publishers, exhibition venues, and all those who preserve and develop the country's cultural space celebrate their professional holiday. In 2026, Cultural Worker's Day falls on Wednesday. How this date appeared, what traditions are associated with it, who is congratulated and how, read the Izvestia article.
Cultural Worker's Day – 2026: the history of the holiday
Cultural Worker's Day was officially established by decree of Russian President Vladimir Putin on August 27, 2007, and has been celebrated at the national level since 2008. However, even before this decision, different regions of the country had their own dates honoring industry employees.
One of the first mentions of such a celebration dates back to 1996, it was held in the Naro-Fominsk district of the Moscow region on the initiative of poet and composer Igor Gerasimov and director Oksana Akatskova. Similar actions later took place in other regions, demonstrating that the professional community needs a common date.
The then Minister of Culture and Mass Communications, Alexander Sokolov, played a key role in the establishment of the holiday at the state level. In the spring of 2007, he proposed to give the Cultural Worker's Day an official status. March 25 was chosen without reference to any historical event. On the one hand, it was necessary to combine the already existing regional traditions, on the other hand, not to impose a new holiday on other professional dates.
Traditions of celebrating Cultural Worker's Day
Official ceremonies, professional meetings, and public cultural events are held in Russia on Cultural Worker's Day. One of the most notable traditions of recent years remains the awarding of presidential prizes to young cultural figures and awards in the field of literature and art for works for children and youth.
For the holiday, museums open special exhibitions and hold guided tours, libraries arrange meetings of authors with readers, thematic lectures and literary evenings. Theaters and concert venues prepare special programs, concerts, and festival screenings, while cultural centers and art schools offer open classes and creative meetings.
On this day, the teams present diplomas and commendations, congratulate colleagues, and celebrate those who usually remain behind the scenes — curators of funds, editors, administrators, sound engineers, librarians, tour guides, and teachers of art schools.
