Even successful students may show poor results in exams due to stress, assignment format, and psychological pressure. The head of the Ingosstrakh Virtual Clinic project, psychologist Konstantin Letts-Orletsov, told about this on March 24.

According to the expert, the reasons for the failures of excellent students in exams can be different and are not always related only to psychological stability. In particular, the exam format may differ from the usual training system, and the basic skills may not be sufficiently developed.

The expert emphasized that anxiety has a significant impact on the outcome. With strong excitement, it becomes more difficult for a person to concentrate, memory deteriorates and the speed of thinking decreases. As a result, even well-learned material can be reproduced worse than expected.

"The higher the stress level, the more likely it is that the exam will be worse than expected, even if the material is well mastered," he noted.

Separately, the expert noted the influence of perfectionism. The desire to complete tasks perfectly and the fear of making mistakes create additional tension, which causes the student to lose confidence. In such conditions, even minor difficulties can cause stupor and interfere with the performance of tasks. In addition, pressure from parents and teachers plays an important role. Constant reminders about the importance of the exam and high expectations increase stress.

The expert also gave recommendations on how to reduce anxiety before the exam. He advised using breathing techniques, performing simple physical exercises, and applying visualization techniques to represent the successful completion of the test.

"Visualization works too: it's worth closing your eyes for a minute and imagining how confidently and calmly you answer questions. A little physical warm—up — squats, walking on the spot — helps to relieve tension and regain balance," the doctor noted.

Letts-Orletsov added that in conditions of emotional stability and support, students are more likely to be able to demonstrate their real knowledge and abilities.

On March 22, Inga Gorbunova, an expert at the Ministry of Education, a teacher-psychologist from St. Petersburg, the author of the educational project "Cool Parent", said that in order to support children before passing the Unified State Exam, it is important to give them your love and remind them that the results of the Unified State Exam do not affect the attitude towards them in the family. She also recommended that parents take care of the child's physical condition — to remind them about proper nutrition and proper sleep. It is also important to think about passing exams more often.
