In an interview with Radio 1 on Tuesday, March 24, the expert noted that HPV may not manifest itself for a long time, which is its main danger. According to her, the disease proceeds without pronounced symptoms and is detected only with a special examination. She clarified that viruses affecting the cervix are transmitted primarily sexually, while strains that cause papillomas and warts can also spread through domestic use.

The specialist emphasized that vaccination is an effective preventive measure, and it is possible to get vaccinated both before and after sexual activity, but it is better to do it in advance. According to her, the vaccine is suitable for both women and men and protects against four types of the virus, including highly oncogenic 16 and 18. She added that, according to research, more than half of the population is infected with HPV of various types, while oncogenic strains occur in about 20%, more often in sexually active women.

Yakhina recalled that residents of the Moscow region can take an HPV test for free at women's clinics, and for women under 49, the test is included in the reproductive medical examination program.
