The development of neural networks and generative technologies is blurring the boundaries between the contribution of the artist and the work of algorithms. Veronika Pleshkova, an art artist, told Izvestia about this on March 25.

According to Pleshkova, the turning point was in 2018, when the portrait "Edmond de Belami", created using a neural network, was sold at auction at Christie's. This case drew attention to the issues of authorship and marked the transition of technology from an experimental field to a full-fledged part of the artistic process.

The artist emphasized that we are talking about a broader phenomenon — generative art, where an image is created not directly, but through rules and algorithms set by the author. Pleshkova noted that modern neural networks are able to reproduce style, mood, and visual language, which makes the boundary between human input and the work of an algorithm less obvious. In such conditions, the artist increasingly acts as the creator of the system: formulates a request, sets parameters and selects the result.

At the same time, according to her, tension remains around authorship and image rights, since neural networks are trained on the works of other artists — often without their consent.

"We are now at a moment when a new artistic environment has already developed, but there are no rules for it yet," she said.

In turn, psychologist Ekaterina Mikhailova, in a conversation with Izvestia, added that the changes also affect viewers, since the way of perception is changing.

"More and more often we do not look at the image, but scroll through it. This creates a superficial view: even strong works do not have time to evoke a deep response," Mikhailova said.

In addition, the psychologist pointed out the lack of an "aura" in digital works. She explained that the physical presence of the work enhances the emotional connection, which is difficult to reproduce digitally. At the same time, the expert emphasized that the digital environment opens up new opportunities for interaction with art and can contribute to the development of imagination.
