Psychologist, neurophysiologist, teacher of sanogenic thinking Irina Pavlova said that the character of a child is laid in the womb even before birth.

In conversation with the agency RuNews24.Ru On Monday, March 23, she noted that the child's nervous system begins to form as early as the third week of pregnancy, and by the sixth, up to 250,000 neurons appear every minute. At the same time, microglia, as studies have shown, not only "cleanses" the brain, but also regulates the multiplication of neurons, affecting the child's behavior — calmer or hyperactive.

She noted that in 2025, Spanish scientists discovered a mechanism linking maternal stress with the development of the fetal psyche: with chronic stress, the protective enzyme in the placenta is disrupted, and cortisol begins to affect the child's brain. According to her, this can lead to low birth weight, increased anxiety and difficulties with self-regulation.

The expert stressed that the impact of stress depends on the duration of pregnancy: at 15-16 weeks, it can reduce the total number of neurons, in the second trimester it can disrupt connections between the hemispheres, and in the later stages it especially affects the development of the brain in boys, affecting the areas responsible for emotions and attention, notes 360.ru .

She added that stress leaves so-called epigenetic "marks" on DNA that can be passed down through generations, but they can be adjusted by lifestyle.

The psychologist also warned that it is important for expectant mothers to avoid chronic stress, not to give up support and not overload themselves with disturbing information. kp.ru . According to her, positive emotions, breathing practices, music and communication help to reduce cortisol levels and have a positive effect on a child's development. The specialist emphasized that character is formed not only by genes, but also by the conditions of the intrauterine period, where the condition of the mother plays a key role.

In February, reproductive therapist Oksana Gaivoronskaya called for mandatory tests when planning pregnancy. According to her, couples planning pregnancy are advised to undergo a basic medical examination to assess their reproductive health and reduce possible risks.
