- Mitvol, convicted of multimillion-dollar embezzlement, will be released on March 24.
Oleg Mitvol, the former deputy head of Rosprirodnadzor, who was convicted of embezzlement of over 900 million rubles, will be released on Tuesday, March 24. His lawyer Mikhail Sholokhov informed Izvestia about this on March 23.
"Oleg Mitvol, convicted in the case of embezzlement of 900 million rubles, will be released on March 24," he said.
The former deputy head of Rosprirodnadzor, who held this post from 2004 to 2009, was convicted in September 2023 in accordance with Part 4 of Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (Fraud committed by an organized group or on a particularly large scale or resulting in the deprivation of a citizen's right to housing). He did not agree with the court's decision and was going to challenge it at that time.
Mitvol, who was also an ex-prefect of the Northern Administrative District of Moscow from 2009 to 2010, was arrested back in 2022. It was noted that the theft was committed by him during the construction of the metro in Krasnoyarsk. In the fall of 2025, the court denied the accused early release and did not grant his request for a reduced sentence. The defendant, speaking about his salary received in a correctional institution, the amount of which was 15 thousand rubles, stated that it would take him an extremely long time to fully repay the damage exceeding 900 million rubles with such an income.
On August 1, 2024, the Prosecutor's Office of the Krasnoyarsk Territory also announced that two Krasnoyarsk residents had been sentenced for attempting to provide false assistance in mitigating the punishment of Mitvol. The defendants were sentenced to 3.5 years in prison to serve time in a general regime colony.
