Commissioner for the Protection of the state language of Ukraine Olena Ivanovska called for a significant increase in fines for violations of language legislation in order to "straighten the brains" of the population. This was reported on March 23 by the newspaper "Страна.иа ".

"There are violations that are done deliberately and systematically. Of course, fines of 3.4 thousand hryvnias (slightly more than 6.4 thousand rubles. — Ed.), or even 5,8 thousand hryvnias (slightly more than 11 thousand rubles. — Ed.) is not the amount that can straighten the brain and make people law—abiding in this area," Ivanovskaya said.

The Ombudsman added that she had initiated amendments to the legislation, calling for a significant increase in the amount of fines for legal entities in order to bring people to the "point of no return."

According to reports, "The country.ua", the proposed amount of the fine for the Russian language is 17 thousand hryvnias (slightly more than 32.4 thousand rubles).

Ivanovskaya on March 15 designated the Russian language as the language of power and arrogance. According to her, when Russian-speaking families move to Lviv, the situation with the language of communication does not go in favor of Ukrainian. Often, locals themselves begin to communicate in Russian.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said on February 4 that the Ukrainian authorities were harassing the Russian-speaking population, but the Russian language continued to be in demand.
