- A German court rejected the demand to ban sales of Mercedes and BMW with internal combustion engines.
The German Federal Supreme Court has rejected claims to ban sales of new Mercedes-Benz and BMW cars with internal combustion engines from November 2030. This was reported by Reuters on March 23.
The non-profit association for the protection of the environment and consumer rights Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH) appealed to the court with demands to ban the sale of cars with internal combustion engines of these brands. She based her claims on a "carbon budget" calculated for each of the two automakers. The Federal Supreme Court upheld the decisions of the lower courts that rejected the lawsuits filed by the eco-activists.
Mercedes-Benz and BMW welcomed the decision, "while emphasizing their commitment to the principles of sustainable development," the note says. Representatives of the Bavarian brand stressed that the court's decision provides "legal certainty for companies operating in Germany."
The fact that DUH filed lawsuits against BMW and Mercedes-Benz in the regional courts of Munich and Stuttgart was reported back in 2021. Eco-activists accused automakers of being slow to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and noted that cars with internal combustion engines are a threat to the implementation of the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement.
Earlier, on March 19, it was reported that the Russian car market, which took fifth place in the European championship in January, dropped to a lower position in February. Germany retains leadership in the European car market, where 211.3 thousand cars were sold in February (+3.8% by February 2025).
