The government Commission on Legislative Activity has approved the introduction of criminal liability for illegal cryptomining carried out by an organized group or which has caused particularly large damage or income. This was announced on March 23 in the department.

"Approved," the source told RIA Novosti.

According to the bill, for such crimes, a fine of 500,000 to 2.5 million rubles is provided, forced labor or imprisonment for up to five years, as well as confiscation of the proceeds. Damage or income in excess of 13 million rubles is considered particularly large.

The investigation of cases under this article falls within the competence of the investigators of the internal affairs bodies. The introduction of criminal liability is aimed at ensuring compliance with registration requirements in the field of mining and creating a mechanism to curb illegal activities.

On March 20, the Russian government imposed a complete ban on cryptocurrency mining in several districts of the Republic of Buryatia and the Trans-Baikal Territory until March 15, 2031. It was clarified that the restrictive measures will enter into force on April 1, 2026. The ban applies to the territories of the subjects of Russia indicated in the relevant items of the government list.
