The political scientist assessed the risks of Hungary's isolation in the EU
Internal tensions may increase in the European Union (EU) against the background of Hungary's possible political isolation and limitation of its influence on decision-making. This was announced to Izvestia on March 23 by Evgeny Zlenko, project manager of the Polylog Group.
According to the expert, the actions against Budapest contradict the unspoken principles of solidarity and equality, which are declared at the heart of the EU union treaty. He noted that the current line of Brussels may lead to the gradual exclusion of Hungary from participation in key decision-making processes within the association.
"In such a scenario, the country will formally retain membership in the European Union, but its real influence on the union's policy will be significantly limited. We can talk about partial political isolation without a legal exit from the EU structure," the political scientist explained.
Zlenko also pointed out the possible side effects of such a strategy. He stressed that increased pressure from Brussels could cause a backlash within Hungary itself. This may lead to an increase in Eurosceptic sentiments in society and an increase in internal contradictions between the national agenda and the pan-European course. In the long term, such a scenario poses risks not only for Hungary, but also for the stability of the European Union itself.
"Attempts at pressure may paradoxically play against Brussels, strengthening euroscepticism within the country," Zlenko said.
On March 22, Politico newspaper, citing sources, reported that the EU was restricting Hungary's participation in confidential meetings and reducing the flow of classified information due to concerns that Budapest might transfer data to Moscow. Distrust has led to the fact that key discussions in Europe are increasingly taking place in small group formats: E3 (Germany, France, Great Britain), E4 (E3 and Italy), the Weimar Triangle (Germany, France, Poland), the North Baltic Eight and others.
