Every year on April 7, believers celebrate the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, one of the most important holidays in the church calendar. On this day, the archangel Gabriel appeared to the Virgin Mary and announced to her the impending birth of Jesus Christ. In 2026, the celebration falls on a Tuesday. About what powerful prayers to read on the Annunciation, to whom and what to pray on this day, - in the material of Izvestia.

Who should I pray to at the Annunciation

According to the Gospel of Luke, the archangel Gabriel appeared to the Virgin Mary in the city of Nazareth and announced that she would become the Mother of God. This event took place nine months before the Birth of Christ. Then the angel told the girl that she would give birth to a son who would become great, and his kingdom would have no end.

However, Maria doubtfully asked Gabriel how this was possible if she "didn't know her husband." In response, the angel promised the girl the immaculate conception, saying that the power of the Almighty would "overshadow her." After that, Mary agreed, saying, "Behold, the handmaid of the Lord; let it be done to Me according to your word."

It is believed that at this moment the conception of Christ took place, and the young girl became the "second Eve", who completely surrendered herself to the will of God, thereby redeeming the fall of the first people.

For Orthodox Christians, the meaning of the Annunciation is comparable to Christmas. It is one of the main feasts of the Mother of God, and during services in churches they remember biblical events and glorify the Mother of God.

What to pray to the Most Holy Theotokos for the Annunciation

You can say the words of prayer not only in the temple, but also at home. During the celebration, believers often pray in front of the icon of the Annunciation, which depicts the Blessed Virgin Mary and the messenger of God, the archangel Gabriel, at the moment of telling her the good news. This image is especially revered on this church holiday, although you can pray in front of it any day.

The Orthodox ask the Most Holy Theotokos for deliverance from pride, for protection from various troubles, and for intercession before God. In addition, believers recite prayers for the relief of symptoms of diseases, for a full recovery, as well as for receiving good and joyful news.

It is believed that the Mother of God is also attentive to requests for family happiness and well-being, therefore, on the holiday, many women ask for her help in conceiving and bearing a child, easy childbirth, marriage and maintaining family well-being.

What troparia and kontakion should be read on a holiday?

During the Annunciation, special festive hymns are performed, including the troparion "Today is the Day of our Salvation" and the kontakion "To the Exalted Voivode." The troparion reveals the significance of the event and talks about the fulfillment of God's plan and the mystery of the coming of Christ the Savior into the world.:

"Today is the primacy of our salvation, and the appearance of the mysteries from time immemorial: The Son of God is the Son of a Virgin, and Gabriel proclaims grace. Moreover, he and I will cry out to the Mother of God: hail, Full of Grace, the Lord is with You."

A separate troparion is sung on the eve of the Annunciation of the Most Holy Theotokos on April 6.:

"Today, the world-wide joys of the firstfruits of the feast command: behold, Gabriel comes bearing the gospel to the Virgin, and cries to Her: Hail, Full of grace, the Lord is with You."

On the holiday, Orthodox Christians also read the kontakion, which speaks of the Mother of God as a patroness who can save people from troubles and evil. During prayer, Christians say the following:

"To the victorious Voivode, for having been delivered from the evil ones, let us give thanks to Thee, Thy servants, Theotokos. But, as you have an invincible power, free us from all kinds of troubles, and we call You: rejoice, You Unnamed Bride."

Prayer for health at the Annunciation

On this day, believers recite these lines while reciting prayers to the Mother of God for bodily and mental ailments.:

"Accept, O All-blessed and All-powerful Most Pure Lady, Lady, and Virgin Mother of God, these prayers that are now offered to You, for You are the One who exists and hears our supplications, and gives with faith to those who ask for what is not granted. For you lighten the sorrows of the afflicted, grant health to the weak, heal the weak and sick, drive demons away from demons, deliver the offended from insults, cleanse lepers, and little children, free them from bonds and prisons, and heal all kinds of diverse passions. O Ever-virgin, Most Glorious and Immaculate, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen to that."

"The hope of all the ends of the earth, Most Pure Virgin, to Our Lady Theotokos. Do not shun me, a sinner, for I trust in Your mercy: extinguish the flame of sin and water my withered heart with repentance, cleanse my mind from sinful thoughts, accept the supplication from my soul and heart with a sigh I offer to You. O Lady, be an intercessor for me to Your Son and God, and tame His wrath with Your maternal prayers; heal the sores of your soul and body, heal the sores of your soul and body, take away the burden of my sins, and comfort the sorrow of my broken heart, so that I may praise You to my last breath. Amen to that."

Prayer to the Mother of God for children

During the Annunciation, Orthodox Christians often pray to the Mother of God for the well-being of their children.:

"O Most Holy Lady, the Virgin Theotokos, save and preserve under Your roof my children (names), all youths, young men and infants, baptized and nameless and carried in their mother's womb. Cover them with the robe of Your motherhood, keep them in the fear of God and in obedience to their parents, and beseech my Lord and Your Son to grant them what is useful for their salvation. I hand them over to Your Maternal care. Amen to that."

Prayers for marriage at the Annunciation

In addition, on the holiday, women also pay a lot of attention to prayers for marriage, asking the Mother of God to help them create family ties.:

"O Most Holy, God-chosen Virgin, the All-Immaculate Bride of the Holy Comforter of the Spirit, and the Daughter of the Most Divine Heavenly Father, who is exalted in the midst of the thorns of this world, having thereby been found, as a most luminous cry resplendent with the goodness of virginity, may the Pure Mother of God, Unadulterated, be! What shall we reward You on this most holy day of the Annunciation, that you have surprised the Archangel Gabriel with the beauty of Your immeasurable virginity and received unspeakable joy from it? What shall we bring You for all Your consolations, that you have made the whole world, visible and invisible, rejoice on this day, especially the fallen ancient human race? Today is the beginning of our salvation and the appearance of the mysteries from time immemorial: now the Word of God quietly descends from heaven, like a drop dripping onto the earth, and dwells in Your God-blessed Virgin womb and is the Flesh of our salvation. For this reason, today the Angels rejoice in heaven, and the whole creation rejoices and rejoices, celebrating the beginning of its liberation from the work of corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God. Now the female nature rejoices, having fallen for Eve's sake, for she, having obeyed the serpent, gave birth to sorrow to her wives and uncontrollably introduced death. But you, O Virgin, have freed the whole human race from bitter work, and through the freedom of Christ you have honored the feminine nature, and through pure virginity you have led a true life, and for the sake of your wife, you keep your virginity, and you begin to overcome the enemy. Now Adam rejoices, seeing that on this most holy day the first heavenly gospel has been fulfilled upon You, for the seed of the Woman will erase the head of the serpent. With whom the whole human race rejoices today, because of You, O Most Pure One, the ancient aversion of God to man has been abolished today, for you have brought God to us. For this reason, we see You now, like Jacob of old, like a high Ladder, which God has descended to earth and like a mighty Bridge, which He has raised from the earth to heaven. What shall we reward You, Queen of heaven and earth, for all this, for which you have given untold joy to Your fallen and deluded people? All our sacrifices and offerings are worthless before the majesty of Your benefactions. There is only one thing that pleases You: "a contrite and humble heart," which both your Son and our Lord "will not despise." For this reason we beseech You: fill us with Your exceeding high humility, as much as we can, so that on the all-holy day of Your Annunciation we may bring You Thine from Thine, so that you may not think loftily in every matter, but that you may abide in humility of spirit. I adorn you with my first virtue, on the most holy day of this feast.

In your meekness and purity of heart, let us cry out to you with the Archangel Gabriel: Hail, Full of Grace, Hail, Overjoyed, Hail, Most Blessed, the Lord is with You and You are with us forever and ever. Amen to that."
