Securities are inherited either by will or by law in accordance with the established order. On March 23, an expert from the NIFI project of the Ministry of Finance of the Russian Federation, "My Finances.Russian Federation" Olga Daineko.

"If the testator left a will, the assets will go to the persons indicated in it. However, even in this case, certain categories of citizens (minor children, disabled spouses, parents and dependents) are entitled to a mandatory share in the inheritance, regardless of the contents of the will," the expert told the Prime agency.

Daineko explained that if relatives do not know about the deceased's securities, the notary independently requests information from depositories, registrars and the Federal Tax Service (FTS). After receiving the data, the accounting organization blocks operations on the account until the heirs take over.

After six months, the heir receives a certificate of inheritance rights and can apply to the depository with it. To transfer securities, you will need to open a custody account or use an existing brokerage account.

The expert noted three key features of inheritance. Firstly, if the papers cannot be divided equally, the heirs will have to negotiate among themselves or resolve the issue through the court. Secondly, the inherited assets themselves are not taxed, but the tax arises when they are sold. Thirdly, the right to investment deductions is not inherited, although the deductions already received are inherited on a general basis.

The lawyer of the Legal Policy collegium, Irina Gritsenko, said on the same day that notaries are required to inform heirs about the debts of the deceased after the opening of the inheritance case. She noted that the basic rules of inheritance in Russia are preserved: a six-month period for accepting an inheritance, the order of heirs established by law and the mandatory appeal to a notary.
