Indian chess player Hampi Koneru has decided to withdraw from the International Chess Federation (FIDE) candidates tournament in Cyprus for security reasons due to the escalation of the situation in the Middle East. She announced this on March 22 on the social network X.

"After much thought, I made the difficult decision to withdraw from the FIDE Candidates tournament. No event, no matter how important, can be more important than personal safety and well—being," the athlete wrote.
