The verdict of the first instance against the head of Gagauzia, Yevgenia Hutsul, is a public execution, and the case itself is political in nature. Natalia Bayram, the politician's lawyer, told Izvestia about this on March 20.

"What happened in the first instance was a public execution, it was not justice and it was not a sentence imposed within the framework of the law," Bayram said.

According to the defender, Hutsul is currently awaiting a decision that the judges will announce on May 28. She hopes that the judicial system will eventually do its job and deliver a fair verdict. In parallel with the work in Moldova, protection also applies in international courts. A complaint has already been filed with the European Court of Human Rights for illegal detention.

"The verdict of the first instance, not being executive, not having an executive character. The court decided to throw her into this prison right away. We believe that this is illegal, it contradicts the norms of the European Convention," the lawyer said.

Another complaint has been filed with the United Nations. The defense hopes that the appeals chamber, unlike the first instance, will deliver justice. According to Bayram, there was no difference in approach in the appeals chamber. Both in the first instance and during the review of the case, the defense was limited in its right to provide evidence. The Appeals Chamber rejected the request for an expert examination.

"For a moment, Evgenia Hutsul is accused of deliberately accepting 40 million lei, which is €2 million. Money that no one has ever seen. The prosecutors did not see this money, as it was not seized during the search, neither at Evgenia's home, nor at work— anywhere. They just calculated it based on certain tables, where there are a lot of errors and a lot of inaccuracies," the lawyer emphasized.

Bayram is convinced that the case against the Hutsuls is purely political in nature. According to her, anyone involved in law, after reading the verdict, will come to the conclusion that there is not a single proof of guilt. The Hutsuls have two minor children, a 14—year-old son and a three-year-old boy. In her last words, she said that the verdict affected not only her, but also the children who were separated from their mother.

"It's a big grief, it's a drama. I don't understand, as a judge, what questions she asked herself in the discussion room when she was considering what punishment to impose on Evgenia Hutsul. The Code provides criteria such as mitigating circumstances. The woman, the mother, the minor children, had never been brought to justice before," the lawyer said.

Hutsul, accused of allegedly financing the Shor party, was sentenced to seven years in prison on August 5, 2025. This case, which caused a wide worldwide response, attracted international lawyers William Julie and Gonzalo Boye, who, among others, defended the defendant.

Kamil Gosson, a lawyer at the WJ Avocats bureau and a member of the Hutsul defense team, told Izvestia on October 29 that Bashkan's lawyers had filed an appeal with the United Nations (UN) due to violations of the rights of lawyer Sergei Moraru, who is being persecuted only for representing her interests in Moldova. An appeal to the UN Human Rights Committee is also being prepared.
