No country in the world, except Russia, still has titanium-hulled submarines. This was stated on March 20 by Mikhail Kovalchuk, President of the Kurchatov Institute Research Center, at a press conference at the event in honor of the 100th anniversary of Academician Igor Gorynin.

According to the head of the Kurchatov Institute, perpetuating the memory of outstanding scientists is an important way to draw public attention to science. Gorynin, he said, has been creating materials for decades that make Russia sovereign. Largely due to his efforts, the country became a "great materials science power."

"We have unique materials — first of all, these are nuclear submarines, these are icebreakers — this is something that either no one else in the world has, like a nuclear icebreaker, or individual countries have, like nuclear submarines. For example, no one in the world has had a submarine with a titanium hull for almost 60 years, but we have had it since 1971," Kovalchuk said.

Kovalchuk said on January 22 that Russia should not allow shipbuilding and the navy to lag behind technological innovations that are already actively used in the space industry. He recalled that many modern breakthrough developments, such as the Burevestnik intercontinental cruise missile and the Poseidon unmanned underwater vehicle, are based on research begun in the late 1940s.
