- Reuters has learned of the first death from meningitis in France amid an outbreak in Britain
It became known about the first fatal case of meningitis in France, registered after reports of an outbreak in the UK. This was reported on March 20 by the Reuters news agency with reference to the company where the deceased worked.
"An employee of the French nuclear fuel company Orano plant in Normandy has died of meningitis. <...> There is no evidence that the case can be linked to the deadly outbreak in the UK," the article says.
The corporation noted that the patient was in contact with about 50 employees, who were prescribed to take antibiotics proactively and stay at home for 10 days. The local authorities were also informed about the incident.
On March 15, the UK Health Safety Agency (UKHSA) reported a reported outbreak of meningitis in the country. Then it became known about two dead and 11 injured.
Four days later, The Mirror newspaper reported the death of 39-year-old Briton David Monteiro from this disease. He mistook the symptoms for the effects of an uncomfortable sleep, which, in his mistaken opinion, caused him headaches and lower back pain, as well as stiffness in his neck.
The man called an ambulance only when he started having seizures. The victim's sister Rachel Monteiro said that his illness progressed so closely that his relatives did not have time to talk to him before his death.
